A Legacy of Defense
Adam Johnson didn’t just choose criminal defense—he was born into it. Growing up as the son of Terry Johnson, one of Lake Charles’ most respected attorneys, Adam witnessed firsthand the profound impact that skilled, dedicated legal representation can have on people’s lives. That experience shaped his path and fueled his passion for defending the accused. After earning his law degree, Adam clerked for the Honorable Judge Robert Wyatt and the Honorable Judge Ronald Ware at the 14th Judicial District Court, gaining invaluable insight into courtroom dynamics, judicial decision-making, and the inner workings of Louisiana’s criminal justice system. Adam also serves as the Head Bar Examiner for the Criminal Section of the Louisiana Bar Exam, writing and reviewing the test that admits future Louisiana lawyers into the practice of law.
Building a Record of Results
Since joining The Johnson Firm in 2009, Adam has compiled an extraordinary track record of results. He has tried multiple cases before juries in both State and Federal courts, with every jury trial in which he served as lead counsel resulting in not guilty verdicts. His ability to connect with jurors, dismantle the prosecution’s case through precise cross-examination, and deliver compelling closing arguments has made him a formidable force in any courtroom. Adam’s success extends beyond the trial courtroom. He has achieved a series of overturned convictions on behalf of clients seeking post-conviction relief, including multiple life sentences. Through meticulous investigation and unwavering attention to detail, he has uncovered exculpatory evidence suppressed by the State—evidence that ultimately proved his clients’ innocence.
Expanding the Law
Adam has also successfully argued cases before the Louisiana Supreme Court, helping to expand precedent law and solidifying his reputation as a formidable advocate. His appellate work has not only changed outcomes for individual clients but has also shaped the legal landscape for criminal defense in Louisiana. His deep understanding of both trial and appellate procedure gives clients a significant advantage at every stage of their case.
A Community-Centered Approach
What drives Adam is simple: being there when people need it most. He is widely respected in the Lake Charles community for his integrity, his accessibility, and his genuine commitment to justice. Unlike many attorneys who handle a high volume of cases, Adam takes a selective approach—accepting only the cases where he can make a meaningful impact and give each client the attention they deserve. Adam approaches every case—large or small—with the same intensity and purpose, continuing the Johnson family tradition of serious defense in Lake Charles. When you hire Adam Johnson, you don’t just get an attorney. You get an advocate who will fight for you as if his own future is on the line.
Beyond the Courtroom
Adam is married to Ashley (Leonards) Johnson. They have three sons: Jack, James, and John Paul and are active members of Trinity Baptist Church.
